CPT NOTICE
Effective immediately, UVA is suspending the authorization of non-required, course-credit CPT requests. This includes opportunities tied to academic credit, which are integral to the program of study but not required for degree completion. Duration of Status & Academic Mobility
On September 14, 2026, a nationwide preliminary injunction was issued, which blocks the Elimination of Duration of Status rule from taking effect and prohibits DHS and USCIS from implementing it. The government is expected to appeal the injunction. Please continue to monitor our FAQ page, which we will continue to update with any developments as the case continues.
The Department of Homeland Security's rule introduces significant changes to regulations governing F and J visa holders, including:
- The elimination of Duration of Status
- Restrictions on academic mobility

Travel and Arrival
You may enter the U.S. on your J-1 visa up to 30 days before the program start date on your DS-2019.
Airports
The nearest airport is Charlottesville Albemarle Airport (CHO), located approximately 12 km from UVA. The nearest international airport is Washington Dulles (IAD). We recommend flying into CHO as the cost of transportation from Dulles may exceed the difference in airfare.
Taxi service and Uber/Lyft are available at CHO.
UVA does not offer pick up service from any airport.
Train & Bus
The Amtrak train station is approximately 1.5 km from UVA grounds, with daily service to and from Union Station in Washington, D.C.
The Virginia Breeze bus offers daily service to and from Washington, D.C. and Dulles International Airport. The Greyhound bus also offers service to Washington, D.C.
UVA’s Student Council organizes bus trips to and from Dulles at semester start and end, as well as over long breaks.
