Newly Admitted Students

Congratulations on your admission to the University of Virginia! We welcome you to the international student body of more than 2,500 graduate and undergraduate students from over 100 countries. We look forward to meeting you.

If you are an exchange student, please visit the exchange student page

Before beginning the immigration request below, please do the following:

  1. Accept your offer with UVA.
    • Undergraduates: Please view instructions here
    • Graduates: Follow instructions from your school of enrollment
  2. Create your UVA email
  3. Set up your NetBadge authentication.

1. Visa Document and Application

  • Determine if you wish to obtain F-1 or J-1 status (details about each status)
  • Request visa documents from UVA: New Student Request
    • You will need to wait at least one day after you accept your offer for your record to update in our system so that you may have access to begin your "New Student Request" form located on ISSP Connect. If you try to access ISSP Connect early, it will not allow you to log in.
      • If you are returning to work on an existing application, DO NOT use the "New Student Request" link to open a new request. This will result in significant delays in processing. Instead, resume your place in an existing request by logging onto, and select your application from your student portal. After submitting required documents, questionnaires and verifications (if required), do not forget to click the submit button on the top of the page.
  • Complete and submit your visa applicationF-1 or J-1 Visa Application Process

2. Check-in with ISO and UVA

You will need coverage beginning your first day in the U.S.  The University-approved Aetna plan does not begin until August 15.  For short-term coverage plans the following resource can be consulted: NAFSA Insurance Search.

3. ISO Orientation

Attend an Orientation Session with the ISO.

If you missed the spring 2021 virtual orientation session, you can watch the recording online. You’ll need to sign in to Zoom with your UVA computing ID and password by clicking on the sign in with SSO button.

Please also check with your department and/or Orientation & New Student Programs for additional orientation events.

Failure to submit your documents to ISO will result in a block on your university registration and may potentially result in a loss of your legal status in the U.S.

Meet: The Global Greeters!

The Global Greeters are UVA students who work with ISO to assist and welcome incoming international students during the week of orientation in August, and to a lesser degree, throughout their first semester here on Grounds. Check out their summer events and resources and connect with them on Facebook and Instagram.

UVA Express

UVA Express is a program designed to help transition new international first-year, transfer undergraduate, and exchange students living outside of the United States into life at the University of Virginia. Although the program is unable to provide a shuttle from Dulles for students arriving for fall 2020 and spring 2021, we will be in contact directly with new students about the offerings this year.
