CPT NOTICE
Effective immediately, UVA is suspending the authorization of non-required, course-credit CPT requests. This includes opportunities tied to academic credit, which are integral to the program of study but not required for degree completion. Duration of Status & Academic Mobility
On September 14, 2026, a nationwide preliminary injunction was issued, which blocks the Elimination of Duration of Status rule from taking effect and prohibits DHS and USCIS from implementing it. The government is expected to appeal the injunction. Please continue to monitor our FAQ page, which we will continue to update with any developments as the case continues.
The Department of Homeland Security's rule introduces significant changes to regulations governing F and J visa holders, including:
- The elimination of Duration of Status
- Restrictions on academic mobility

About UVA's exchange program
The University of Virginia has exchange agreements with partner institutions in many countries around the world. You must be enrolled in and nominated by a university that has a formal exchange agreement with UVA in order to participate in the exchange program.

About the (J-1) Exchange Visitor Program
The Exchange Visitor Program began in 1961 as a way to foster exchanges and bring people to the U.S. to study, train, research, and teach. It brings around 300,000 visitors from 200 countries and territories each year to experience U.S. culture and return home and share their experiences.
Because it is an exchange program, there are particular requirements related to the J-1 visa: As a participant in this program, you'll be expected to: Return home once you have completed your program, to share about your experience; Carry health insurance that meets specific requirements for the duration of your program; and speak a sufficient level of English to fully participate in your studies and social and cultural activities during your time at UVA.
Additionally, the US Department of State (who oversees the Exchange Visitor Program) takes several steps to ensure that all participants have a meaningful and safe experience. Sponsors are expected to monitor and report any serious problem or controversy that impacts an exchange visitor or the reputation of the university sponsor or Department of State.
