CPT NOTICE
Effective immediately, UVA is suspending the authorization of non-required, course-credit CPT requests. This includes opportunities tied to academic credit, which are integral to the program of study but not required for degree completion. Visit CPT Update | International Students & Scholars Program for the latest information.
Duration of Status & Academic Mobility
On September 14, 2026, a nationwide preliminary injunction was issued, which blocks the Elimination of Duration of Status rule from taking effect and prohibits DHS and USCIS from implementing it. The government is expected to appeal the injunction. Please continue to monitor our FAQ page, which we will continue to update with any developments as the case continues.
The Department of Homeland Security's rule introduces significant changes to regulations governing F and J visa holders, including:
- The elimination of Duration of Status
- Restrictions on academic mobility

Mandatory Check In and Orientation
Every Exchange Visitor to the University is required to check in with the ISO within 30 days of the start date listed on their DS-2019. US government regulations require that we report the arrival of the J-1 Exchange Visitor in SEVIS within the first 30 days after the program start date on the DS-2019 document begins.
Check-in and orientation is held every Monday and Wednesday at 10 am via Zoom. Exchange visitors must complete and submit the Arrival Documentation on their ISSP connect portal. The documents required to upload are the following:
- DS-2019 form
- passport with visa
- I-94 arrival record printout from the CBP website (https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html)
- Evidence of appropriate health insurance coverage (if applicable, choose Submit Insurance Documentation and complete and submit that online)
During this meeting we review their legal documents and go over the regulations and requirements they must follow in order to maintain legal status in the US. We also answer any questions they have regarding settling in to Charlottesville and the UVA community and introduce them to other programs and services offered by our office.
