OPT Receipt Delays

February 12, 2021

Students who have submitted applications for OPT, Post Completion as well as the STEM Extension, have been experiencing unprecedented delays in getting the Receipt Notice for the filing from USCIS.  A process that normally takes about 3 weeks to be receipted is now taking 2-3 months.  This is obviously causing a lot of anxiety, justifiably so, as there is no way to know whether your OPT application was received and is in the adjudication process, or lost in the mail.

The ISO offers the following recommendations:

  • Make sure that when you file any application with Immigration it is sent overnight by FedEx or UPS.  Maintain tracking information.
  • Check to see if your means of payment was withdrawn, whether check, money order or cashiers check.  We do not recommend using the credit card option.
  • Check with the ISO after 3 weeks from filing to see if your receipt number appears in SEVIS.
  • ** If more than 90 days has passed since you filed the application with USCIS you can request Case Assistance with the CIS Ombudsman here: https://www.dhs.gov/case-assistance
